Before going to Honduras, our experience in the states
for 10 years was in home missions. Such as street outreach, a coffee house
ministry, evangelism, and taking in problem teens. We have always felt
called into the mission field, but the Lord didn’t open the door until 1989.
At that time, I had my own plumbing business and we closed that down. I went
to the Philippines for a short term to help out in a ministry. Our pastor
went on a mission trip and made us aware of the need in Honduras and we felt
that was where God called us. There was an existing mission compound that
was abandoned but was set up as a medical clinic. It was run down and in
need of someone to develop it and maintain it. So we were sent from New
Testament Mission to work with Gospel Crusade in Honduras. They had about
150 churches and were in need of someone to help in their remote areas. So
we have worked as a support ministry to them for the past 13 years. We
started out in a village called Palacios and our first years we got the
grounds maintained and up and running. Then we found and trained local
people to work in the clinic. Afterwards, a young man from Atlanta came down
and worked with us and we opened a bilingual school, which he ran and later
became the principle of. Also, during those years, we worked with Gospel
Crusade injunction with their churches and also have had short term bible
institutes to train leaders. After several years there, we saw the great
need for fresh water. Our clinics were a great help to the health problems
in the areas, but we realized that fresh water was the prevention of many
health problems. So we became very active in providing fresh water. We put
in about 250 wells and trained local people to put them in. Palacios is
composed of 3 culture groups: Latin, Mosquito Indians and Garifunas. We felt
like the work was well established in the churches and on the mission
compound and everything was running smooth. So we turned the work over to
Drew Williams who was running the school and moved further out to the
Mosquito Coast where there was a great need in the churches. The village was
called Belen and we had spent about a year and a half establishing the
compound. My present responsibility with Gospel Crusade is supervising the
work in the area. Our vision for Belen is to provide potable water to the
many villages along the coast. We are putting in full water systems to the
villages. We also provide medical help as well as eye glasses, worm medicine
and baby formula for malnourished babies. The area has a large land area
scattered with small villages through out the back country. There are about
3 different denominational groups that I work with closely. I have an open
door in all 3 groups to train leaders. We have a need to develop new methods
to evangelize the outlying areas. We are starting a discipleship training
program to train leaders to go into the back areas and minister. |
